《九十九羊》（The Ninety and Nine）這首詩的作者，克萊芬（Elizabeth C. Clephane），1830年生於蘇格蘭的艾丁堡，長於麥柔斯（Melrose）一個富裕的家庭，是家中最安靜且最贏弱的孩子。她雖僅僅在世39年，但卻充滿喜樂，熱心賙濟、關懷周圍困苦的人，當地的人都稱她為“陽光”。她還喜愛寫詩，常佚名發表許多作品。《九十九羊》這首詩，是她離世前不久，特別為孩童而寫，並刊載在《兒童時光》刊物上。
1874年，即克萊芬去世5年之後，音樂家桑奇（Ira D. Sankey）隨美國大佈道家慕迪，坐火車到蘇格蘭艾丁堡領聚會。桑奇在火車站買了一份報紙，翻閱之中，瞥見了這首詩。他很希望慕迪也能讀一讀，但慕迪忙於講章，根本沒有時間。桑奇就隨手撕了下來，放進口袋。
當晚聚會的主題是：“好牧人”，出自新約《路加福音》15：3-7。到了講道的尾部，慕迪出其不意地要求桑奇獨唱一首聖詩作為結束。桑奇雖然感到有些突然，但聖靈卻立刻提醒他從口袋中將那首詩拿出來，放在管風琴的譜架上。他很快地禱告後，把手放在降A大調上，旋律就從他口中及琴鍵之間奇妙地誕生了。
這是桑奇第一次嘗試譜寫聖詩，竟有如此的成績！他常說，這是他一生中壓力最大的一刻。但他也非常清晰地感受到，這首詩歌深深感動了蘇格蘭的聽眾。當他唱至末了時，慕迪也和他一樣淚眼婆娑。那天講道後，許多“迷失的羊”都一一地走上前，回應耶穌基督這位好牧人的呼召，歸回羊圈。

（一）
There were ninety and nine that safely lay
In the shelter of the fold.
But one was out on the hills away,
Far off from the gates of gold.
Away on the mountains wild and bare.
Away from the tender Shepherd’s care.

峭壁山嶺，雷鳴裂響，
聲起石岩頂上
直達天庭，音韻嘹亮，
“樂哉，尋著我羊！”
環繞寶座，天使應唱：
“樂哉！主已尋回迷羊！
“樂哉！主已尋回迷羊！”
很明顯的，這首詩是根據主耶穌在《路加福音》15章中的比喻寫成。主耶穌還同時敘述了另一個“婦人失錢”的比喻。這兩個比喻中，都使用了“尋找”這一個強烈的動詞，好似一個母親走失了自己心愛的孩子，焦急心情之下，隨之而來的是全力的尋找。找著後，那種失而復得的無比欣喜，又毫不保留地和他人一同分享、慶賀。
每一個基督徒都是那迷途的小羊，一直處在傷痕累累、痛苦迷惘、甚至滅亡的危險中。幸有好牧人耶穌翻山越嶺地來尋找。他為尋找付出了代價，終得懷抱著那飽嚐憂驚的小羊，以那寬闊有力的肩膀，一路扛著它回家。
克萊芬的詩，將我們帶進一個動態的圖畫當中，是一隻迷羊和愛他的好牧人之間深刻的描寫。“因我們還軟弱的時候，基督就按所定的日期為罪人死”，原來不是我們努力行善尋得神，乃是慈愛的神來尋找我們。願主耶穌呼喚我們的時候，我們就如羊轉頭奔向他，讓他懷抱我們，扛我們在肩，領我們回家。
